The Last Supper by LindaRHerzog The Last Supper by LindaRHerzog
The Last Supper   3' x 6'   oil on canvas.  I spent a year on this painting and spent time with research to get the disciples renditions and symbols of characters correct.  Here is a condensed version of my notes...

Character Descriptions Of Apostles

Bartholomew (Nathaniel)

Cheerful and devoted. Not much known of him. Flayed alive with a carving knife. Only disciple with royal blood. The color purple and elephants symbolizes royalty = Elephant

James The Younger (Lesser)

Not much known, mentioned only three times in the Bible. James the Just - virtue. Stoned then killed by a fullers club to head then sawed him in half. A dolphin symbolizes virtue = Dolphin

Andrew

Commercial fisherman. A leader and often gathered people to come to Jesus. Brought the boy with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread to Jesus to feed the crowd of thousands. Died not nailed but tied on an X shaped cross. Social and a gatherer. = Border Collie

Judas Iscariot

Social and vocal in crowds. Loved money, carried and handled the Apostles money bag. Died hanging himself, from a tree. Crows are very social and vocal, and attracted to shiny objects. = Crow

Peter

Commercial fisherman and in the Inner Circle. Bold confident and talkative and was the leader and spokesmen for the apostles. Only married apostle. Died on a cross upside down. The name Peter means made of stone or rock. Denied Christ 3 times before the rooster crows. = Plymouth Rock Rooster

John

Commercial fisherman and in the Inner Circle. Served poison in a cup it turned into a snake. He was the youngest disciple. The only disciple to die of old age. “Beloved Disciple”, Brother of James the greater. “Sons of thunder” and had a temper, he was ambitious and bold. = Badger

Jesus

Pomegranate is a symbol of Christs suffering and resurrection. At the supper, Jesus took off his outer robe and washed his disciples feet from a bowl of water. He broke bread to represent his body, poured wine into his glass and had each of the disciples take a sip to remember his blood. Died on the cross. “King of kings”, “King of the Jews”... King of the jungle. = Lion

Thomas

Little known about Tomas. Referred to be as Jesus twin because they looked alike – Gemini twin symbol. Skeptic, “Doubting Thomas”. Speared to death. He was timid = Deer

James The Greater

Commercial fisherman and in the Inner Circle. Closest apostle to Jesus. Brother to John - “Sons of Thunder”. Scallop shell – symbol of his ministry. Stoned to death. He was courageous and ambitious. = Cougar

Matthew

Publican tax collector and not liked by the Jews. Little known of him but good with the pen and wrote the book of Matthew. Axed to death. Dexterous and good with the pen = Raccoon

Jude (Thaddeus)

Fire halo represents when at the Pentecost he received the Holy Spirit and became “tongue of fire”. After Jesus died, he wore a picture of Jesus on a necklace. Killed by arrows. Little know of him but a man of positive force and virtue. = Bull

Makes me think of The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis, which revealed was some parallel Earth version of Jesus. 😅

But where's Mary M?  Or is it John?  We were probabley working through the same months and coming up with differnt interpretations of the same material. The one thing I could not escape was that "Jesus's favorite" was always , (except for three versions I found, and I found scores, as I am sure you did too) was 'androgennous" to say the least. In most paintings the person on Jesus's right had no beard, was effeminate and in many cases being caressed or holding hands. I concluded that John, was either a young boy, an effeminate man or Mary Magdalene. Thus I have 13 decibels in my painting. What do you think? I have a folder of "Last Supper" paintings illustrating my point if you are interested.
Meanwhile...great work!

This is a very interesting painting, you have somehow identified qualities in all the men that they represent by using animals. You are deeply perceptive. But I am really confused as to why there are mysteriously floating... Koi fish? What are they doing, and why are they there? Additionally this is cool.

I just added my condensed notes to the description. I should have added the fish in that as well. Those with flying fish over them were previously commercial fishermen. Peter with the one upside down represents that he was hung on a cross upside down. Peter didn't feel worthy to die the same way Jesus did.

i don't think any of the gospels said anything about Jesus flying into the future, nor is he particularly known for such.

a lion makes sense because, as stated in the description, Jesus was known as the "King of kings" and "King of the Jews". even a lamb would make more sense than an eagle due to his sacrificial character.

Jesus didn't sacrifice himself, that anti-jewfuck judass ratted him out to the roman empire.  He was a eagle because his mind flew on the skies.  Also lions are assholes and sheep are rude and smell bad.

the bible says it was god's will that Jesus sacrifice himself to save us from eternal death, even Jesus knew all along that Judas would hand him over to the Romans to die on the cross. Jesus didn't die for nothing, he didn't die in failure because it was all part of his plan.

well then in that case, if you use flight to symbolize Christ's mental and spiritual ascension, we can say that Jesus can be symbolized by any animal that can fly high, he could be a falcon, or an albatross, or even a buzzard, all of which can fly just as high as an eagle.

also eagles can be assholes too, for example they usually lay only two eggs, the firstborn will always kill the secondborn and the parents will absolutely do nothing to stop it. also eagles are large birds who therefore take large shits so i don't think they're all that nice smelling either, and if one of their dookies lands on your head or on your car, that would be rather rude too now would it?

it's funny how animals aren't really all as great as we make them out to be.

This is beautiful and very interesting, but may I ask why the animals? It seems to me that the Lion (king of the savannah) is representing jesus as a "king of the heavens"... How about the others? Im just very fascinated by this piece!
